PORT & SHIPPING
Port and shipping
is the biggest activity in the project area besides
industry. Port Klang is strategically located on a world shipping map for
transit cargos between east and the west. This is achieved through 3 major ports
in Port Klang, namely Westport, Northport
and South Point. All of these ports are located within a radius of 3 kilometers
of each others and have an extensive road and highways network to the industrial
area. Located 40km west of Kuala Lumpur which is only 40 minutes drive by car,
these ports are the main gateway to Malaysia by sea. This is further exemplify
by the connection of a port and airport (Kuala Lumpur International Airport,
KLIA is only 40km South-east of Port Klang) which sees transshipment between the
two major cargo transport means.
Port Klang previously known as Port Swettenham was
opened by Frank Swettenham in the early 20th century. Prior to that
it was a small port used by traders to unload their merchandise such as tin
ores, opium and foodstuff. Now Port Klang is continuously spreading its wings to
become the country’s premier port with its North, South and West Ports. The West
Port, where the Star Cruise terminal is located, is one of the biggest leisure
cruise terminals in the Asia-Pacific region. More than 14,207 number of ships
call were recorded at Port Klang for the year 2001 which comprise of bulk
liquid, dry bulk, general cargo, container and passenger ships. On the same
time, the port handles an import cargo volume of 40,486,597 ton metric and
export of 29,662,546 ton metric. Number of container handled were 3,759,512 TEUs
which is 17.2% higher than 2000. Star Cruise terminal at West Port and North
Port handled a total of 346,067 passengers. North Port handles passengers
between Port Klang and Pulau Ketam and Tanjung Balai, Indonesia.
Ranked 57th on the "World's Top Port" chart in 1980, Port Klang has
steadily climbed the ladder to secure a 12th spot last year in terms
of TEUs handled. Port Klang sees it handled 4.8 million TEUs last year and half
year report for 2004 already sees a double-digit increase in the number of
container handled. Among the mainline operators includes CMA, Hanjin, Evergreen,
Noarasia and Gold Star. Most of these operator has recorded a three-digit growth
within a short period at Port Klang. In March 2003, Westport achieved 271 mph
(movement per hour) while working on mv Ville De Virgo.
First September 2004 was historical to Westport as 5th generation
vessel, as 334 meter long and 14.5m built draft CSCL Europe with
8,500 TEU capacity made it call to the port at 430 pm local time from Hong Kong.
This is the second CSCL's 8,500-TEU series to visit Port Klang after CSCL
Asia. The berthing was smooth for this big vessel and the handling of the
container was at breeze, explained Capt. Li Kelin, China Shipping (Group)
President.
