LUAS had the opportunity to deliver a briefing on the Zero Discharge Policy (ZDP) currently being implemented in the state of Selangor through the Selangor State Regulations on Licensing for the Discharge of Return Water and the Entry or Release of Waste Materials and Pollutants 2024. This briefing took place during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The briefing was presented by the Assistant Director of the River Basin and Coastal Management Division of LUAS, Ms. Haslina Binti Amer, and was also attended by the Head of the Environmental Management Unit, Mr. Mohd Nazifi Bin Nawawi. Among the panelists were the Chairman of SPAN, Mr. Charles Santiago; the CEO of Singapore's PUB, Mr. Ong Tze Chin; and the Director of PEMANDU Associates Sdn. Bhd., Mr. Ridzwan Bin Hamzah.
The session focused on the implementation of the ZDP in Selangor, which aims, among other objectives, to encourage premises to reduce the quantity of effluent discharged and promote efforts to reuse wastewater.
LUAS expressed its appreciation to UNFCCC COP29 for the opportunity to share its experiences and perspectives at the international level. This conference provided added value and knowledge exchange between Malaysia, Selangor, and member countries to enhance water resource management and reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
